Union Square
No other location in the city is as alive with vibrant activity around the clock as Union Square,
which takes its namesake from Union Army rallies held during the Civil War. Today, the square buzzes
as one of the largest gatherings of shops, department stores, upscale boutiques, salons, and
galleries in the country, while also hosting several off-Broadway and single-act theaters.
Fisherman's Wharf
Take in the smell of fresh sourdough bread wafting in over the Bay, as fishing boats roll
gently along the dock. Hop aboard the historic F-Line streetcar or cruise along a sightseeing
boat toward world-famous Alcatraz or Angel Island. There is only one Fisherman's Wharf and it
is here in San Francisco.
Japantown/Fillmore
As one of the oldest and only remaining areas home to more than 12,000 citizens of Japanese
descent, Japantown, founded in 1906 is in NOPA, north of the Golden Gate Park panhandle.
The New York times has called this area an 'urban frontier' and it also frequently appears
on the foodies' GPS for late-night meals.
North Beach
By day North Beach is awash in peaceful solitude as regulars practice tai chi in Washington
Square. Take the No. 39 to Telegraph Hill and see the famous Coit Tower. Unwind with a
cappucino and espresso and watch as the area bursts alive at night with live music, dancing,
and endless entertainment.
Nob Hill
Home to many of the city's old money families, this affluent district was settled in the
late 19th century. With commanding views and a prime central location, it quickly turned
into an exclusive haven for the rich and famous on the west coast.
Chinatown
Enter the "Dragon's Gate" and you'll find yourself strolling through 24 blocks of endless
activity. Chinatown is a city within a city showcasing exotic shops, fresh food markets,
museums and galleries, and temples. Visit this treasured neighborhood and enjoy a "dim sum"
lunch, shop for remedies, or indulge in samples at a tea bar.
South Beach
Visit a true oasis in the heart of San Francisco at Yerba Buena Gardens, showcasing the largest
collection of art west of the Hudson River. In South Beach you'll also find Moscone Center,
along with over a dozen museums and a touching memorial to the great Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Financial District
Montgomery Street, also known as the "Wall Street of the West" serves as the heart of this
financial epicenter. The city's tallest buildings stand watch over the Financial District,
including the Transamerica Pyramid. This neighborhood serves as headquarters to the area's
largest collection of corporate offices, banks, law firms, and other financial institutions.
Castro/Upper Market
Take the world-famous F-Line Cable Car to the Castro, the historic "Gay Capital of the World."
Trendy stores, quaint outdoor cafes, and beautiful Victorian homes line the streets of this famed
San Francisco neighborhood.
Marina/Presidio
Uncover the area's most stunning historic buildings as you gaze up at the mansions of Pacific
Heights along the outdoor cafes of Union Street. Or enjoy a day of pleasant shopping along
Outdoor Sacramento Street or Laurel Heights.
Mission District
The Mission, Bernal Heights, and Potrero Hill boast some of the best weather found in all of
San Francisco and are fantastic for enjoying a wealth of fog-free days.
Golden Gate Park
This gorgeous park spanning 1017 acres is often compared to New York's Central Park, but
features 174 more acres of beautiful rolling hills and natural scenery. More than 13 million
visitors come to the park each year, making it the third most visited in the US.
